He won this speed class with the bay mare ‘Elisa BJX’ Italian, Luca Moneta won the 1.35 with ‘Chilli 41’ and the 1.30 was won by Anastasia Nielsen from Monaco with ‘Buffy 53’

The Andalucía PreSunshine Tour 2023, kicked off in style today with top British rider, Matt Sampson, demonstrating that he is going to be the one to beat this Tour. In the biggest class of the day, the 1.40 he rode a neat balanced round with the bay mare ‘Elisa BJX’ to take the win in a hotly contested class, held in the Milton Arena. His time was 58.01s a smidgeon in front of the rider taking second.

This British rider is a regular here at the Tour and at the top of the leaderboard. He demonstrates his talents not only with young horses, but also across a complete range of classes. He was the winner of the Invitational Grand Prix class here, ten years ago. He was named last year’s’ Spruce Meadows' Xerox Rider of the Year’, and finished off his season by winning the prestigious ‘Turkish Airlines Grand Prix CSI5*-W’ in London, with his regular top horse ‘Ebolensky’. Matt and his girlfriend Kara Chad, also based themselves here at Montenmedio during the winter, preparing for this 2023 season. “For me and my girlfriend Kara, it was an easy decision to base ourselves here in the sunshine. The facilities are the best in the world and the whole Sunshine Tour team couldn’t have made us feel more welcome. To be able to use all the facilities here, every day, really is a great asset in producing and training all of our horses!”. Indeed this strategy clearly paid off as Kara, who is Canadian, was the winner of the 7yr old class today with ‘Gability van de Eijkhof Z’.

Matt was also third today in the 1.35 class with ‘MGH Candy Girl’, so all in all a great start for him at the Andalucía PreSunshine Tour 2023, which is sponsored by the Consejería de Turismo, Cultura y Deporte and cofounded by the European Union

Back to the 1.40, and hot on Matt’s heels was the Dutch rider Rogier Linssen, stopping the clock 0.03 seconds behind Matt with ‘Dancing Nini Z’, in 58.04s. Third was Sergio Álvarez Moya with ‘Charisma HS’, who is one of the top Spanish riders, and is starting his season off here at the Andalucía Sunshine Tour.

Gyula Szuhai Jr. for Hungary, with ‘Perthy Jackson’ was fourth and World number two, Swiss rider, Martin Fuchs started off his season well, with ‘Viper Z’ finishing comfortably, in fifth place.

Luca Moneta with ‘Chilli 41’ was the winner of the 1.35 with local Spanish rider Borja Bidón Daurella and ‘Coach Cornet Z’ coming in second.

Anastasia Nielsen from Monaco, was the winner of the 1.30 with ‘Buffy 53’. Luca Moneta was second with ‘El Capone RK’ and Martin Fuchs was third with ‘Pina Van de Moerhoeve’.

The young horse classes started up today and Kara Chad was the winner of the 7yr olds and the only rider to finish in under 30s with the mare ‘Gability Van de Eijkhof Z’. Second was the French rider, Yan Chartier with ‘Chicharita 3’, and third was Alberto Márquez Galobardes with ‘Rapunzel’.

The week’s jumping here at the Andalucía PreSunshine Tour ends on Sunday with a 2* Grand Prix class.
